- Description:
- Plane, "L D", "WILLIAM ASH & CO". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood with annular rings on sides and heel. Chamfer starts at small notch at front, extends up to top, square front corner, across top edge, down back edge to another notch. Right side chamfer mirrors left side. Wider in center and has boat-tail rear. Flat chamfer across bottom edge on both sides. Cutting pattern is a shallow, concave surface. Cutting width of iron at bottom is 1.5". Iron width higher up above body is 1.6". Depth of concave surface is 0.1" at toe end. Stamped at heel: "3 1/2". Stamped on front, vertically: "L D[O]..." where it goes off edge. Horizontal stamps with D and portion of O go through the top two stamps and appear to be duplicates of previous "J R TOLMAN" stamps from 1970.070.060 "HANOVER MASS". This one has bottom edge of "HANOVER", is serrated and "MASS" is serrated at top. Serrations are all the way around of both of them from what evidence there is. Below that is another stamp, slightly diagonal box stamp with serrated top and maybe small portion of bottom with most missing: "L DOD[GE]". One character has a segment of serrations in another stamp below the fragments. On the "HANOVER" some is obscured by accretions. Iron stuck in place. Back iron screwed to iron with flat-head cap screw with slot and it rides in a rectangular slot in iron and then small round key hole at top. On back iron is stamped, box stamp serrated edges, top center in symbol of simple crown. Two lines of text incomplete: "WMAS[H &....]. Below is space then "AST STEE" (CAST STEEL). Iron has top edge turned over by being struck. Stamp on it which has flat-bottom edge, two short vertical sides that lead to semi-circle across top. Semi-circular line of text at top and two lines of text at bottom. Below semi-circular text is raised area with symbol of crown struck in center. "WILLIAM ASH & Co". Two horizontal lines: "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL". Some evidence of serrations around outside edge of this stamp. Both irons have straight top edge and steeply slanted cut corners.
