- Description:
- Plane, molding. "F. ROWE". Medium-brown, fine-grained, hardwood. Narrow annular ring marks on sides. Chamfer on left side starts in a notch, goes up front to a square front corner, across top to point where it ends. Chamfer on right side starts about an inch from top edge, goes up to square front corner, goes across top of back edge to where it stops. Plane has been highly modified from its original configuration. Cutting pattern looks to be originally for straight, flat surface. Iron cutting edge 0.02" wide. Original sole surface gone. Surface in front of mouth extends upward. Sides of plane in front of mouth have been deeply cut away to form a triangular sole and slightly pointed front end. Sole behind mouth has been cut away to form a two-segment surface that leads to top edge. The very back of top edge has been turned over slightly by some type of blows. Sides of plane have been deeply cut away to form a slightly long, narrow triangle for sole surface. Heel is a very narrow triangle with widest part at top. Height of sole at front is 2.6". Height sole at back is 2.1". Sides of mouth opening are curved and chamfered on both sides. Top edge of curve leads back to bed area. Curved surface in mouth is original. Small area of mouth above modified sole appears to be original. It looks as if bed surface and area above it where iron and iron pass through is modified. Horizontal crack near corner of bed and its top surface on left side of body. Possibly small horizontal crack on right side of body in same area. Mark on toe surface, vertically-oriented stamp, all caps, serif letters: "THE..F. ROWE". Iron and wedge are stuck in place. Iron has central tang. End of iron turned over slightly from being struck. Inactive corrosion on iron.
