- Object Name:

- Object ID:
- 1979.070.031
- Description:
- Plane, molding "N B GOVE", "_TOOL CO_". Light-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Roughly horizontal annular rings. Some rays showing vertically on heel. Lots of flecks and swirls on left side and some flecks on right side. On left small horizontal groove at front edge on left side about halfway up. Upward from groove, edge is chamfered to a right angle top front edge. Top left edge is chamfered from front to rounded back edge. Back edge chamfered downward to a small horizontal groove that roughly corresponds with height of extension on right side. On right side chamfering mirrors the configuration on left side. Top of extension has shallow concave groove in it. Plane has small sharp, straight chamfers across bottom, left, and right edges. Flat sole at left and large concave, half-round leading down to narrow, flat lip at right. Then the edge of lip extends directly upward to flat land that extends to right edge. Keyed insert at left side that is 1" high, 0.35" wide. Near top are two shallow rectangular key ways on either side of insert. Insert forms left edge and part of concave surface. Second insert near right side that is 0.8" high, 0.21" wide. It forms right lip of pattern. Evidence of some shrinkage in length of inserts. Stamp on heel near bottom surface. Horizontal stamp: "No (superscript, possibly underlined 'o') 137)". Above that may be "1". On toe is horizontal, inverted stamp: "NDLGOVE". Above it, vertically oriented stamp with letters curved upward facing right side: "GREENFIELD TOOL Co ("o" is superscript).". "GREENFIELD......". Blade has some inactive corrosion on cutting surfaces. Tang is on left side of blade. Possible weld mark across top edge of blade below tang. Top surface of tang stamped at end. Two lines of text. Top line is quite obscured with only parts of characters. Below that tang may have been cut off. "P.....ANTED CAST S EE {L}". Looks like blade probably has vertical cutting surface on its proper right side which would correspond with pattern in body.
