Plane, Molding

Object Name:
Plane, Molding
Object ID:
1979.070.029
Description:
Plane, molding. "R TAYLOR", "P S SLEEPER". Light-tan, fine-grained hardwood. Grain flecks on right and left side of body and in blade wedge. Some ray marks in wood on heel. No terminal grooves on left side or right side. Edge is chamfered to a right angle top front edge. Top left edge is chamfered from front to rounded back edge. Back edge chamfered downward that roughly corresponds with height of extension on right side. On right side chamfering mirrors the configuration on left side. Top of extension has shallow concave groove in it. Plane has small sharp, straight chamfers across bottom, left, and right edges. Pattern is horizontal sole surface, then vertical surface that leads to small horizontal land. Horizontal land plane extends all the way to right edge. Near middle of that is rectangular groove that extends upward. Insert that forms left most sole and vertical surface. Insert is 0.36" high, 0.16" wide. Appears to be two nail holes at front and back on vertical surface of insert. Slot cut diagonally through insert at blade area. Body is stamped on front. Horizontal without border at top edge of extension: "R{.} TAYLOR". Below that is vertical stamp that has serrated edges and looks to be: "P. S." That faces left side. Above that is another stamp near top facing right side, plain edges. Part not completely struck: "...SLEEPER". Blade has slot in center of it so that there are two separate cutting surfaces side-by-side, about 2.3" wide. Tang on left side of blade area. Evidence of a weld in blade where tang starts. Tang is slightly tapered toward top end. Top end turned over from being struck. Some inactive corrosion on blade surfaces.
