Plane, Molding
- Object Name:
- Plane, Molding
- Object ID:
- 1979.070.014
- Description:
- Plane, molding, wood and steel. "L. DODGE", "...FIELD." Medium brown, fine-grained hardwood. Speckles in wood grain left and right sides. Some vertical rays on front surface. On left small horizontal groove at front edge on left side about halfway up. Upward from groove, edge is chamfered to a right angle top front edge. Top left edge is chamfered from front to rounded back edge. Back edge chamfered downward to a small horizontal groove that roughly corresponds with height of extension on right side. On right side chamfering mirrors the configuration on left side. Top of extension has shallow concave groove in it. Two holes horizontally through body that are 0.7" wide and approximately 0.68" high. Bottom corners are at right angles but top surface is semi-circle in each hole. Some lay-out lines for holes on both sides of plane. Two vertical inserts in bottom surface, approximately 0.56" high and 1.2" wide. A number of dents and tool marks on heel surface. Left-hand side of plane leads down to a flat bottom surface. Two inserts have a space between them approximately 0.3". Surface between inserts in semi-circular groove. Lands on either side of inserts are above bottom surface between inserts. Inserts and surfaces at front of plane are quite worn. Inserts at front are just slightly above surrounding surface. Iron has some corrosion on cutting surfaces. Tang on left side. Very end of tang is slightly turned over. At top end of tang is stamp on side that is partially obscured. "WMGREAV....SONS". Slight evidence of tang being welded to blade portion in two places because of lines on side of tang near cutting edge and definite small delamination near top end of tang. On body are marks on heel and toe. Heel is stamped, vertically-oriented with serrations along top and bottom: "DODGE" visible. Other writing obscured due to hammer marks. Adjacent to that horizontally-oriented "8". On front or toe are some vertically-oriented marks; four different ones, some overlap. The most distinct has serrated bottom edge: ".FIELD MS". Above that is another one: "HHILL...." and above that is upside down "L.DODGE". Above that: "F..R...O". Below those horizontally-oriented: "DODG.." with serrated edges.
