Some light-colored rays evident on front and back on heel and toe surfaces. Some light-colored flecks in wood on right side. On left small horizontal groove at front edge on left side about halfway up. Upward from groove, edge is chamfered to a right angle top front edge. Top left edge is chamfered from front to rounded back edge. Back edge chamfered downward to a small horizontal groove that roughly corresponds with height of extension on right side. On right side chamfering mirrors the configuration on left side. Top of extension has shallow concave groove in it. Bottom surface with single wood insert near right side approximately 0.86" high and 0.14" wide. Section of it behind iron approximately 3 1/4" long is missing. Left side at bottom is sharp bevel in bottom edge in which defines left-hand edge of pattern. Two small grooves and then a semi-circular shoulder that leads downward to sharp edge which then leads further down to a groove with sharp rise which is insert edge. Then it leads upward to right-hand sharp edge of pattern. Iron has cutting edge that conforms to pattern with some corrosion on it. Tang on left side of blade. Some corrosion on tang. Iron is mobile and has some corrosion on bottom surface where cutting surface and flat surface of iron meet. On heel are some dents from striking tools. On toe are stamps. Vertically-oriented stamp with serrated edges: "D. & M. COPELAND." Below that horizontally-oriented on left "M" and on right: "W". Front, toe, and heel surfaces have been vertically sanded slightly.
