Description:
Moulding plane, wood block with iron. "M W", "D & M COPELAND". Medium brown, fine-grained hardwood. Horizontal growth rings evident on front and back. Some light-colored rays evident on left side in vertical pattern. On left small horizontal groove at front edge on left side about halfway up. Upward from groove, edge is chamfered to a right angle top front edge. Top left edge is chamfered from front to rounded back edge. Back edge chamfered downward to a small horizontal groove that roughly corresponds with height of extension on right side. On right side chamfering mirrors the configuration on left side. Top of extension has shallow concave groove in it. On bottom is one hardwood insert from front to back approximately 0.8" high 0.14" wide. Insert has shrunk slightly in its length as it is slightly recessed at toe and heel. On left side at bottom edge is sharp undercut surface that defines edge of pattern. On bottom next to edge of undercut are two small grooves and then sharp-edged peak that is edge of insert. Sima curve then a shallow beveled-edge groove at right side. On heel some small dents. On toe surface marked vertically-oriented stamp with serrated edges: "D & M COPELAND." Below that are two individual horizontally-oriented stamps, left "M" and right "W". Toe and heel surfaces look as if they have been coarsely sanded with vertical sanding marks. Has irons have broad cutting blade and thin tang held in place by wooden wedge and are stuck in place.
