Description:
Moulding plane, wood block with iron wedge. "M W", "M COPELAND". Medium, dark brown, fine-grained hardwood. Some light speckles in grain on left side. On left small horizontal groove at front edge on left side about halfway up. Upward from groove, edge is chamfered to a right angle top front edge. Top left edge is chamfered from front to rounded back edge. Back edge chamfered downward to a small horizontal groove that roughly corresponds with height of extension on right side. On right side chamfering mirrors the configuration on left side. Top of extension has shallow concave groove in it. On bottom surface are three hardwood inlay strips that are approximately 0.6" high and approximately 0.11" wide. These are equally spaced and parallel to each other. Between the three strips is a concave surface. To left and right of outer strips are two flat surfaces that is raised above bottom surface of concave grooves. Cutting iron has concave surface and two extensions on either side that conform with wood inserts. Plane cuts one reeded surface in object wood at a time. If more than one reeded surface is needed, plane is shifted so that the previously cut reed glides in the non-cutting groove while the uncut area is being trimmed and shaped. Couple of small chips missing from inserts. Two of the inserts have shrunk a little in length as they are slightly recessed at heel. A few small dents in wood at heel Plane marked on front on toe: At top is faint, vertically oriented stamp with serrated edges all the way around. Appears to have all "cap" letters: "D....COPELAND." Some lines and grooves through stamp. Below that are two horizontally oriented single stamps. On left is "M" and at right and slightly above is "W". Marks on toe and heel surfaces that look as if they were sanded coarsely.
