- Description:
- Moulding plane, by T. J. McMaster & Co., Auburn, NY. Wood and steel. Medium-brown, fine grained hardwood. Left side of block has some additional material removed from bottom edge. Top front edge is square. Back top edge is rounded. Chamfer on left side of front is small and irregular and extends upward. It starts about halfway up. Top edge chamfer is wider at back end than at front end. Back edge chamfer on left side tapers down to a small groove about halfway up side. Some irregular but worn concave surfaces on the center near left side. On left side are letters stamped into side that are slightly irregular in their alignment: "L DODGE". Looks like block has warped with age because left side not flat plane. Insert in bottom center is not straight. Back section of insert behind mouth has definite bend in it. Insert at front edge is not as high as insert at back edge. On heel are a number of hammer marks. On heel stamped "1/4". On right side of block, chamfer at front, top, and back are much more evenly worn. They terminate in small notches at top edge of extension. Extension has small groove in top edge. Plane of extension on right side is not flat between portions in front of and behind mouth. Maker's marks stamped in serif letters in two lines in vertical rectangles on toe: "T.J. McMASTER, & C" in serrated rectangle; below that is "AUBURN" in serrated rectangle; next to that is "N. Y" in plain rectangle.
