- Description:
- Moulding plane, by Thomas Tileston, Boston. Wood, steel. Medium-brown, fine grained hardwood. Block has square front top edge and rounded rear top edge. Chamfer on left side starts halfway up front at a small groove, extends to top corner, across top and down back where it terminates in another small groove. An area of a textured pattern on left side of block near center section that is pressed into wood. It corresponds with another similar area on right side above extension. This might be caused by block being held by steel-faced bench vise with patterned jaws. On left side is shallow groove parallel to bottom edge approximately 0.2" up that may be just a wear groove. On right side, chamfering starts and stops at top edge of extension. Small rounded grooves at junction between vertical and horizontal surfaces at front and back of extension. These grooves correspond roughly with chamfer limits on left side. Top of extension has shallow groove. Flat plane at an angle at bottom edge of right extension that has an irregular surface. Wedge is tightly held in place. There is a little motion in two irons. Top iron rests slightly above cutting edge of bottom iron. Top iron seems to be a backing iron as it follows contours of cutting iron. On heel are a number of straight line dents that indicate some type of force. On toe near top of block are maker's marks in vertical rectangles. Top one has serrated top and right edge; bottom edge plain; left edge not stamped deeply enough for pattern; serif letters: "T TILESTON". Below that is "BOSTON" in serif italics in rectangle with serrated bottom edge, irregular right and left edges, and plain top edge. Below that is "Harrison Avenue" in serif letters in rectangle with serrated top and right edge; bottom and left edges plain.
