Bed, Field

Object Name:
Bed, Field
Object ID:
1992.038
Date:
circa 1800
Description:
Camp bed, from Contoocook, NH. Frame is cherry, hinged in four sections. Three of the sections hold a canvas while end sections may be a headboard 5.6" deep. Hinges are iron. Canvas is nailed to frame with hand-wrought nails spaced 1" apart; canvas stripping measuring between 2.5" and 3.5" wide. Attached to that canvas by rope is a central rectangular canvas cloth, roughly 56" by 36", stained in several places. At the head end, two squared taper legs are morticed and tenoned in place. A second set of legs are attached to the frame and swing. Rail that swinging legs are attached to has a sloping top, forming a concavity. Appears that another set of legs, for the foot-end of the bed, are missing; three holes on the outer edges of the frame probably held the missing set of legs. End of boards are held with mortise and tenon.
