Description:

Table, medical examining, with mat. Oak wood. Folding head rest and leg rest, total length when opened to horizontal position, 74.5". Head rest adjusts to three positions, with release lever. Leg/foot rest assembly has two separate sections, one for each leg, adjustable to three positions, with release lever. Entire assembly is removable. Rubber-covered foot rests. Angle adjusts as leg supports are lifted. Metal nameplate on foot rests: "The Allison. / W. D. ALLISON Co. M'F'RS. INDIANAPOLIS. IND." Two-piece top. Hinged back support adjusts to five positions, release lever on side. Fluted columns on each corner. Carved leaves applied to each corner of apron. Three drawers on each side. Door on each side with applied wreath design, each swings out with three glass shelves. Entire top tilts side to side with foot pedal. Metal feet with casters. Handle on apron. Includes separate piece of oak with rotating metal tongue, 17.5" long.

Provenance:

Examining table purchased in New York City in 1903 by Dr. Lloyd H. Cogswell (1879-1939), father of donor, when he first established his medical practice in Warner, NH, after leaving Bellevue Medical School in New York. Dr. Thomas G. Cogswell also practiced in Warner, then moved his office to 46 Pleasant Street, Concord, in 1949, bring the table with him. The table was used there until 1987. Lloyd's father, John Ross Cogswell (1840-1923), was also a doctor, first in Franconia, N.H., and later in Warner. He was an 1864 graduate of Dartmouth Medical College. Given in memory of Dr. Lloyd H. Cogswell. The table has the label of W.D. Allison, Co., Indianapolis. This company manufactured physicians office furniture between 1875 and 1910.
