- Description:
- Quilt. Made by Hannah C. Kendall (1823-1900), Bow, NH; 1876. Friendship type made with Centennial prints. Quilt blocks are Nine Patch, elongated into a diamond shape, measuring 8 x 15 1/2 inches, with the shorter dimension being the vertical. Center of each block is signed in ink with a name and the year "1876." Blocks are sashed with Centennial prints in a stripe design with vignettes showing a military drum, cannon, flag, and a bell inscribed "1776." Another stripe design shows a sunrise and a liberty cap on a pole, with a shield bearing the inscription "1876 / PEACE." The fabrics used in the pieced diamond blocks are typical dress calicoes of the 1870s, including double pinks (favored for children's dresses), and many designs in shades of brown. Plain muslin backing. Binding is a straight grain strip taken from one of the Centennial prints. The quilting is stitched with white cotton thread at 6-7 stitches per inch "in the ditch" of the pieced diamonds and then continuing on in the same manner into the sashing and border. The blue pencil lines to mark the quilting are still evident in the border triangles. Hand-written in ink on the back in one corner is the inscription, "Centennial Quilt / Mother's."
