- Description:
- Quilt. Made by Emily G. Hadley (1817-1906), Bradford, NH; 1885-1895. Crazy-type; Randomly shaped silk pieces organized within diamonds, which are arranged in eight-pointed stars. Elegantly embroidered with silk twist. The maker worked fine floral and butterfly motifs throughout the quilt, as well as the usual decorative stitches over the edges of the pieces. An owl is worked in one corner. She also did some ribbon work flowers, and embellished manufactured appliques on the quilt. The initials "E.G.H." are worked on one patch, along with the number "69." Nearby, another patch has the initial "YS." The corners of the quilt are canted, and two sides are bound with a plaid silk ribbon. Two other sides have a knife edge and are faced with a woven floral ribbon. The quilt is discreetly tied with brown silk twist at the centers and corners of the stars. Backed with a red calico printed with a black horseshoe design. Thin batting between the layers.
