Object Name:
Top, Quilt
Object ID:
1963.017
Date:
1920-1940
Description:
Quilt Top. Unidentified maker, Bow, NH; 1920-1940. Log Cabin-Pineapple pattern. Blocks are pieced with solid red and various light-colored dress and shirting prints and woven stripes. Because the quilt is unfinished, the muslin foundation fabrics of the blocks are visible on the back. Some sugar sacking was used and the original printed labels are visible: "...Sold in 1 pound... / For gingerbread, molasses cookies...sold in 1 pound cartons. / A table syrup unequaled for its richness / 'Sweeten it with American Refining Co.'" There are also Domino Sugar bags. The blocks measure approximately 6 inches square; there are 196 blocks (14 x 14) in a straight set. Piecing is stitched by hand and the blocks are joined by machine. The deep red used in this quilt is unusual for this period, and may be an earlier fabric from the maker's fabric stash; however, the prints used are distinctive to the early 20th century.
