- Description:
- Quilt. Made by Polly D. C. Knox (1791-1844); Epsom, NH; 1805-1844. Made from 18th-century quilted imported British petticoats. Pale chartreuse silk, quilted with a border design of leaves, feathers, and tulips, with swirl motifs, in the typical British manner. The petticoat was cut in half, and turned so that the border design forms the design along two sides; the border from another similar imported petticoat was cut and stitched together to form another similarly quilted section up the center of the quilt. The quilting between the border patterns is a diamond grid. The back is formed of the linings of the petticoats, which are various low-grade worsteds in shades of beige, which have been pieced and patched with other similar fabrics. Some of the worsteds under magnification appear to have some silk spun into the yarns (microscopic analysis needed). One of the lining fabrics is a beige/blue worsted with a woven twill check stripe. The edges of the pieced panels are finished by turning under the silk from the top, while the former pocket slits are bound with matching silk tape, another indication that this quilt started out as a quilted petticoat (or two). The quilting is accomplished in various shades of green silk thread at nine stitches to the inch. The batting is white wool. Three outer edges are bound with two different shades of brown silk tape; the remaining edge appears to have once been bound in silk tape, but it's missing now.
