- Description:
- Quilt. Made during the Civil War by Nancy Simes Nutter (Hoit) Kaime (1793-1875) when she was 68 years old. Her husband Samuel Kaime (1789-1875) of Barnstead, NH, made the design. Applique. Hand sewn cotton. Large geometric designs, predominantly red, applied to white ground. Blue serrated border design on three sides; narrow red binding. Predominately red, white, and blue solid-colored cottons. The design consists of a central medallion of a four-sided symmetrical lacy motif contrived from a folded and cut paper template. The cut-outs of this pattern resemble churches, with steeples (a rectangle topped by a triangle, and then a narrow point). It is framed by a blue vine pattern, with red buds at the corners and centers of the sides. Around this framed medallion are separate appliqued motifs, also based on folded and cut paper patterns. One pattern is constructed from rooster shapes arranged in a square around a central star. Some smaller motifs in shades of brown, orange, and yellow calico are arranged amidst the large red appliques. All of the appliqued designs are worked on separate square blocks, which are then pieced together. The border around three edges is a toothed or comb-like design in blue cambric (a glazed cotton material often used as a lining in garments). The background is plain white cotton and the binding is red cotton, applied on the straight grain. The backing is white cotton with a slight sheen, also a typical costume lining fabric. The quilting is done in white cotton thread at 8 to 9 stitches per inch in parallel lines.
