Description:
Quilt. Made by Emily G. Hadley (1817-1906); Bradford, NH; 1880-1900. Silk. Modified Log Cabin, with the "logs" of the block built upon a black square only along two contiguous sides, instead of around all four sides, but still with the contrasting light and dark colors. The blocks are arranged in a Straight Furrows set, in alternating dark and light diagonal lines. The quilt also incorporates the embroidery seen in crazy quilts. Very practiced and beautiful embroidery work, including three-dimensional ribbon work. The black squares are embroidered with a variety of floral and leaf designs in multiply-colored silk twist. Additionally, there are designs of butterflies and fans, including one corner block on the lower right, which is pieced in a fan design of striped silk, then embroidered. All four corner blocks deviate from the Log Cabin variation and are crazy-pieced, or pieced in strips. All of the piecing edges are embroidered with fancy stitches in multiple colors of silk twist. The quilt has narrow borders of royal blue plush on two opposing sides, and burgundy plush on the other opposing sides. Plush in opposing colors set on the bias is used for the binding. Backing is flesh-colored silk pieced out with a peach silk printed with a double spiky ball-shaped motif. Consists of 49 eight-inch squares. Within each square, a smaller (4") square of black silk is embroidered with a flower, plant, or butterfly. Corner squares are of different patterns. Some designs include applique. Pink silk backing in three sections, central section printed. Border of blue and purple velvet.
