- Description:
- Cellarette. Rosewood, with basswood and other secondary woods, probably made in England. The construction of the sides are dovetailed, while the top is pegged construction. The interior is lined with printed (block stamped, red, yellow, and white on black) paper. The exterior is edged with handwrought iron corners and straps which are attached with tacks. There are iron strap hinges on the rear. The lock on the front of the case is sheet iron with a crowned-shaped top and vase-shaped bottom; the lock mechanism is an iron strap spring (key included). Hand-wrought bail handles on each end, attached with splayed hand-wrought pins; the bails have a twist in the center; oval-shaped hand-wrought pin covers. The bottom is a single plank of wood. The interior is divided into three sections with a shelf over the center one. There is a padded section in the center of the lid interior, covered with gold velvet (padding to protect the glassware). The shelf, which sits atop small bottles has "28" inscribed on one side. It is dove tail construction and the edges are beveled all around; it is lined with the same black lining and gold velvet. Cellarette contains 6 large case bottles, which vary in size. All 6 have pontil scars, gold etching in a floral pattern on the top, and glass stoppers are round balls with circle of gold on top, which has worn off of most of the bottles. Six smaller case bottles made in the same manner. Original wine glass sits on the shelf. It is a free blown piece with a base which has three concentric circles, a ridge in the center of the glass stem and the rim of the glass is etched in a gold floral pattern. The other two wine glasses (not original) are also free blown with an etched floral design that is different from the other glass and not done in gold. There are also two glass tumblers (not original).
