Bowl
Object ID:
1966.504
Place of Origin:
England
Date:
1820-1840
Description:
Footed oblong dish. Transfer printed earthenware. Pearlware. Oval dish with upward curving, slightly grooved sides and pierced border, formed of two interlaced undulating bands. Set on outward curving foot, 1 1/8" high, similarly pierced. Underglaze, transfer-printed design in deep blue, of type known by generic name of "Staffordshire blue". Piercings on rim and foot outlined in deep blue. Central scene on inner surface shows two cows on bridge, under which flows a stream; three stags, and classical ruins in foreground; crescent-shaped Neoclassical structure beyond with more stags on lawn, two men in boat; and Gothic ruin on hill in background. Said to be a composite of various scenes in Bath, although 1966 catalogue card states: "Former cataloguer (CBW) says that a paper label read: "Corse." Two repairs at either end of rim on under surface suggest that dish may once have had handles. Badly crazed.
