Grater, Spice

Object Name:
Grater, Spice
Object ID:
1969.005.087
Creator:
Kedden, Thomas
Place of Origin:
London, England
Date:
circa 1700
Description:
Nutmeg Grater. Silver. Consists of three pieces, including grater/scraper, cover, and cap; there may have originally been a second cap, but if so, lack of collar wear suggests that it was not used with this object for long. The grater is a cylindrical tube, fully perforated except for narrow borders on each side, soldered to a circular disk at its base. Solder mark along one length of tube, as well as additional holes in corners, suggest that the piece was pierced while in a flat state, and subsequently rounded into a tube shape. Cover is also a soldered cylindrical tube. Both ends are open, but there is a divider that is 0.7" from one end, and 1.9" from other end; on this divide is a maker's stamp, "TK", in roman letters, in a rectangular mark that is plain on top but has a single serration on bottom. Cover is fully decorated with engraved angular designs that terminate in raised bands at each end; 1/4" collars extend beyond the bands. One collar scratched in roman numerals, "XIII". Solder mark visible on interior. Cap is a short cylindrical tube, soldered to a slightly bigger disk. Top of cap is engraved with a tulip flower. Scratched on interior are roman numerals "XIII".
