Description:
Silhouettes. Portraits of John T. Fiske (1864-1940) and Martha Warde, by Harry P. Hammond (1867-1955), 1886. Pencil on paper. Double-sided, bust-length profiles. Side one: John T. Fiske. Man, facing right, wearing a collared shirt. Facial hair stubble drawn in. Also, woman, facing left, wearing her hair up and a frilly collared dress. The two images overlap by about 50%. Fiske is off centered to the left, while the woman is off centered to the right. Two additional small sketches on paper: one, just below center along right edge, looks like a tulip(?), the other, near center, initially appears to be the man's ear, but it almost looks like half a key hole. Pencil inscription, upper left with arrow pointing to woman's eye: "M.C. Warde's Barnett". Lower center: "John T. Fiske Bum, / H.P.H. Feb. 16, 1886". Side two: Martha Warde. Woman, facing right, wearing her hair up, a high collared dress and a bowler-type hat. Also there is the outline of a face inverted relative to the woman of unidentified person. Pencil inscription on hat: "J. T. Fiske's Hat." Lower center: "Miss. Martha Warde / Concord / H.P.H. Feb. 16, 1886". The "artha" in line 1 is at an angle, clearly added later. Above the main caption: "Married Dr. French, head / of N.H. Insane Hospital". Unframed.
