Description:

Wallpaper, late 18th century, 5 rectangles of a 6-rectangle pattern. Scenes of boy feeding dog. Upper left, boy sitting on chest with flat top. Blue shirt, reddish brown pants, high-top shoes. Holding something in left hand probably something for dog. Dog sitting and looking upward toward left towards boy's face. At left end of chest is maul with straight handle leaning against left wall. Behind boy, cupboard with 3 drawers that extend down to 3-4 ft off the floor. Some type board arrangement that may be part of room or structure. Staved bucket to right of dog. Portion of barrel on its end at right edge with two shades of green leaved plant material lower right corner and more at top edge. Looks like earth or dirt floor. Brown, framed rectangles, green leaf decoration, bright blue and red. Bottom center girl seated on basket. Had, reddish blouse, red pocket, blue apron, feeding dog. Simple hat with ribbon. Right hand resting in her lap. Left hand extended upwards and index finger sticking out as if to get dog's attention. Dog sitting on his haunches with paws out to beg. Lines and shading in dog to indicate long fur. They are outside a building. Green leaf decor opposite rectangle as vine. Upper corner closed shutter with long strap hinge. Shutter 4 adjoining solid boards. Two shades of green in lower right corner and a few small leaves, lower left corner. Small rocks on ground. In alternate recessed panels, raised rectangular panels with clipped corners, beveled edges, and shadows on bottom and right edges. Each panel, slightly yellow background with a number of irregular but parallel texture lines perhaps to simulate wood grain. In each panel, upright oval medallion with small detail around edge. Fanciful symmetrical and curlicue decorations at top and bottom and two smaller similar ones at left and right center edge of oval. Top oval, scene in tan, white, and brown of male and female figures. Female has something large on head and long dress that ends 10" above ground roughly. Dark plain shoes. Accompanied by small male with hat, short coat, probably long pants. Walking on a short bridge over small gully. Some tall plants behind them. Lower left panel, woman standing facing left, wearing skirt under long top. Carrying something under her left arm which is extended downward. Container sitting on rock. It may be near water. Plants behind her. Lower right corner medallion, man facing right, carrying a bundle of something long on his back that is sitting diagonally. His arms extended over his thorax as if holding strap attached to bundle. Wearing coat. Showing tall, knee-length socks and dark shoe. By his proper right leg, dog walking in same direction adjacent to him. Plants in background. Height of panels: 9.1". Width of each panel: 6.1". Blank edge left side: 0.7" wide. Blank band right side, 0.65" wide. Each panel recessed by having beveled edges in shadows on right and tip edges to give dimensionality.
