Description:
Wallpaper roll, more than four repeats. Rococo revival style, deep red (221, 222) ground, simulating crushed velvet, brocade-like, over which are applied metallic gold (874, 872, 875) oval frames (medallions) surrounded by foliage. Flanking frame on left and right are thin vases from which drape roses and leaves. In center of frame is flat metallic gold abstract palmette. Machine-printed, acidic paper. Walter-soluble ground coat. Design machine-printed. Shading appears to have been done with sponges, randomly blotting and wiping some of the paint away to give the effect of velvet. In left-hand margin, in metallic gold, reads, "GROUND PROCESS. PAT'D JAN. 3rd 1905.", repeated five times and marks for alignment printed five times; on right-hand margin, in metallic gold, reads, "4" and on a banner, "LIBERTY PAPERS", and marks for alignment, repeated four times. The roll has never been used. Repeat of lettering group: 15.6". Test circles on left side. Two test circles in sequence of 18.8". Background color with slight residues on both edges. In gold, some overprinting with a couple shades of gray to help give depth to decorations. On left side, blank border width: 0.7". On right side, blank border width also 0.7".
