Description:
Woodworker's marking gauge. Wood and brass. Initials, "H S". Medium-brown, fine-grain hardwood shaft and slide with brass fittings. Square shaft with two opposite sides being slightly convex. Roughly square slide passes over shaft; secured with thumb screw on one side. Slide has two opposite sides slightly convex. These face same direction as the convex side of shaft. Slide about 0.95" thick. Slide has two inlaid brass strips on one side near flat side edges. Brass thumbscrew in one side where it passes through flush brass washer. On one side of shaft is brass slide that rides in shallow slot in center. Slide 0.8" wide. Thumbscrew on end of shaft that when turned, moves slide back and forth. End of slide has steel insert with sharp upward-pointing edge on it that acts as a scribe. Another short piece of brass strip screwed into same slot at end of shaft. Steel flathead slotted screw that holds brass insert. This piece also has steel scribe insert in it. Both scribes in this example quite worn. On side of shaft near adjusting thumb screw are two brass discs opposite each other, 0.35" diameter and recessed. Probably part of adjusting mechanism. Threaded steel shaft that passes through brass nut in shaft, 3.7" long. Adjusting nut can create space between scribes of ~2.4" at maximum. One side of slide is stamped, "H S". On side of slide near thumbscrew is small section of wood that was broken off some time ago. Small steel pin driven through brass strip to hold it in place. Two brass wear strips have small lip on bottom edges and were set into an appropriately configured slot in slide body.
