Rocking arm chair. "Arrow-back" Windsor type, with comb-piece. Both main chair back and comb-piece have bowed crest rails extending beyond stiles at ends, each having a central rectangular tablet with side pieces curing down on both their upper and lower edges--a variation of the "step-down" type of crest. Main chair back has turned cylindrical stiles (the fronts of which are flattened except at bottoms) and four vertical "arrow-shaped" spindles turned at lower ends. Six similar "arrow-shaped" spindles support crest of comb-piece. S-curved arms with rolled ends each supported by two tapering spindles which are tenoned through the arms; the inner spindle under each arm is decorated by an encircling groove 1 1/2 inches above seat. Hollowed oval seat of white pine; stiles and spindles tenoned into back of seat following its rounded outline, stiles and main arm supports being tenoned through seat. Front edge of seat is rounded on upper surface and beveled on lower. Decorative grooves following curved line of spindles at their inner edge and extending around front of seat at top of rounded edge. Four turned, splayed legs, each cylindrical, tapering to juncture with seat, and decorated with three encircling grooves. Four plain, turned stretchers--front, back and sides--each having two decorative grooves. Rockers original. Painted red-brown graining with stencil and freehand bronze decoration including striping, bellflowers (on "arrow-shaped" spindles), and a design of fruit, foliage and tendrils (on both crests). Evidence of former yellow and green paint. Paint crazed and flaking in several areas. Comb-piece warped and twisted. Initials "B C" painted on bottom of seat. "CHATHAM PINES" stamped three times on bottom of seat, together with figure "556" painted twice. Arms tenoned at an angle through stiles. Several junctures reinforced with nails.
