Side Chair. "Rod-back" (or "birdcage") Windsor type, with curved cylindrical stiles, each encircled by a groove; stiles tenoned through turned cylindrical crest rail; second, horizontal, cylindrical rail, 2.5" below top of crest rail, is tapered at ends and tenoned through stiles; seven vertical tapering spindles encircled by grooves, three of the spindles tenoned through the crest rail, the other four not extending above lower rail but tenoned through it. Horseshoe-shaped, slightly hollowed, white pine seat with rounded back. Stiles and spindles tenoned into back of seat following its outline, stiles being tenoned through seat. Both upper and lower surfaces of seat beveled on edge along horseshoe curved portion. Entire seat outlined by a decorative groove with secondary grooves following the curved line of the spindles at their inner edge and extending around the front of the seat at the top of the bevel. Four splayed legs tapered at ends; three of them bamboo-turned; back right leg plain and cylindrical (no doubt a replacement). Four turned stretchers, front and left ones bamboo-turned, back and right stretchers being plain, cylindrical replacements. Spindles and horizontal rails seem to be ash. Stained with yellow pigment. Crazed varnish. Evidence of former red-brown paint. Repair on top of seat using filler. Several joints loose. Chalk initials on bottom of seat, apparently reading "AB" with perhaps a letter preceding.
