Side Chair. "Fancy chair," with a slightly bowed, rectangular crest rail extending beyond juncture with stiles and having a rolled top and beveled ends; ends of rolled top visible from front. Turned cylindrical stiles with fronts flattened except at bottoms. Three horizontally oriented, turned cylindrical rods, slightly bowed and grouped together, giving the effect of a single horizontal slat. Horseshoe-shaped rush seat with straight back. The triangular section exposed at each end of front seat rail above legs. Rush seat bordered with wooden strips following outline of seat. Four turned legs, front ones having ring turnings of various widths and tapering to button feet, back ones plain, cylindrical and tapering to base. Six turned stretchers--one at front, one at back, two on each side--all cylindrical, front one having central lozenge shaped element and a ring turning on either side. Painted black with rosewood and tortoiseshell graining, yellow striping and stenciled decoration in bronze (on crest rail, face of stiles, front of seat, and center of front stretcher), main design elements being interrupted bands, scrolls and stylized foliage. Ring turnings of legs bronzed on fronts. Figure "417" painted twice on inner surface of wooden seat borders. Top edge of strip bordering seat worn at sides and front. A steel button on bottom of each foot. Possibly repainted. Probably reseated. Edging strip at back of seat cracked and repaired. Joint between seat and right front leg loose. Circular saw marks visible on curved edging strip, which has apparently been replaced. Break in rush, resulting in looseness at center front. Probably birch. One of a pair.
