Description:
Side Chair. Half-spindle Windsor type, with slightly bowed crest rail extending beyond stiles at ends and having slightly arched top, straight lower edge and ogee-curved ends; turned cylindrical stiles halved at tops to receive crest rail; horizontal, rectangular slat framed between stiles halfway from seat to crest rail; four vertical turned spindles tapering at tops and extending from seat to lower rail. White pine seat with rounded front and back and ogee-curved sides. No beveling of under surface to lighten appearance of seat and top front edge is only slightly rounded. Stiles and spindles tenoned into back of seat following its slightly rounded outline, stiles being tenoned through seat. Four splayed, turned legs, front ones having ball and vase turnings with button feet, rear legs cylindrical and tapered at ends. Four turned stretchers--front, rear, sides--all plain and cylindrical except for front, which is baluster turned with central ball. Painted dark brown with yellow striping; rosewood graining on seat. Stencilled decoration in gold on face of stiles and lower rail. Crest rail has gold border enclosing stencilled fruit in gold, orange and green, with signature "W.P.EATON" at lower right corner of design, apparently cut as part of stencil. Seat constructed from two machine-planed boards. Paint worn especially on seat and front stretcher. Chalk "W" on bottom of seat. Gray priming coat extensively exposed. Stencilled decoration on left stile removed. Probably birch and white pine. One of a set of four.
