Provenance:
Writing box, said to have been used by Gen. Gilman Marston during his tenure in the Civil War. Box has inscription that appears to be a presentation to NHHS in 1920 by Edgar [S.] Irish. However, the box was received with a gift from Edwin W. Eastman in 1948. Edwin W. Eastman's father, Edwin G. Eastman, was a partner in Gen. Marston's Exeter, N.H. law office. However, there may also be a connection to Edgar Irish. Edgar Walton Irish (1838-1897) served in the Civil War at the same time and at some of the same places as General Marston (see Notes field); perhaps Edgar S. Irish is related.
Credit Line:
Gift of Edwin W. Eastman
