The original painting was commissioned as a wedding present for Mary Lamper Kingman, who married Frederick Clark Sayles Jr. in 1900. The initials B.E.K. and F.C.S. on the trunks are those of Barton Eliot Kingman of Yonkers, NY, the bride's father, and Frederick Clark Sayles Sr. of Providence and Pawtucket, RI, the groom's father. Enoch Wood Perry was a friend of the bride's parents. The painting hung in the home of Frederick and Mary Sayles in Irvington-on-Hudson, NY, until the house was sold in 1946. Mrs. Sayles sold the painting to Harry Shaw Newman of the Old Print Shop in New York. Newman sold it to a New Jersey resident, whose family consigned it to Dawson & Nye Auctioneers in Morris Plains, NJ, in 2004. It was purchased by a private collector.
