Depicts the Plymouth Tavern, operated by William Webster from c. 1800 to 1841, apparently as it appeared before its transformation into the first Pemigewasset House by its next owner, Denison Rogers Burnham. Burned in 1862. Drawing based on a photograph. Snow-covered scene. Intersection of two roads at lower right foreground. Two log outbuildings surrounded by fence in left foreground. Two-storey, gambrel-roofed tavern with smoking chimney, at right of center in middle distance. Enclosed porch or entryway at center of facade. Two evergreen trees at right side of building. Yard enclosed by fence. Tall signpost to right of building. Woods in distance. General coloration: House/tavern primarily white with orange-pink chimneys; outbuildings and fences, gray; remainder of scene executed in a combination of gray, white, light blue and orange-brown. Handwritten in black across bottom of drawing: "Arthur B. Wilder / From Photo" and "TAVERN Plymouth, NH 1841-62." Note: middle initial resembles a "D" in signature. Provenance:
Represents the Plymouth Tavern, operated by William Webster from c. 1800 to 1841, apparently as it appeared before its transformation into the first Pemigewasset House by its next owner, Denison Rogers Burnham, who is said to have enlarged the building by 1843. Burned in 1862, but was shortly replaced by the second of three hotels on this site to be known as the Pemigewasset House. Note that this pastel incorrectly dates the scene as 1841-62. Drawing is based on an early daguerreotype presented at an unknown date to the Young Ladies Library Association in Plymouth by inn keeper Burnham's grandson and first published in 1913 as part of Plymouth's sesquicentennial celebration. Abby Frances (Burnham) Greenleaf, Charles H. Greenleaf's first wife, was the daughter of Denison R. Burnham. Part of a collection of paintings and objects donated by Mabelle F. Greenleaf (1873-1966), in memory of her late husband, Charles Henry Greenleaf (1841-1924) and their daughter, Edith Greenleaf.
