- Description:
- Needlework and watercolor picture. One of a pair of en grisaille landscapes, by Olivia Rowe (1803-1875), Exeter, NH, 1818. Landscape of a village, including a steepled church, next to a river with two sailboats in the distance. Two men, one poling, in a boat in the middle distance. This scene is worked with ink wash in shades of gray and silk embroidery in shades of beige to create an "en grisaille" effect. The silk embroidery is very fine and employs closely worked seed stitches to create the leaves of the trees and bushes, as well as long-and-short, and straight stitches. In pencil at the approximate center of the bottom a signature, "O Rowe," and to the right, "O. Rowe July 6 [?] 1818." The silk is tacked to a wooden panel with two labels on the back. The first label gives the history of the piece: "These two specimens of needle- / work were made by Miss Olivia Rowe of / Exeter, N.H. about the year 1819. She / married Hon. John Sullivan, Attorney / General of N.H. Her children were / Geo. S. Sullivan Esq., Edward Sullivan Esq., / and Dr. John Sullivan, the donor; being the / fourth generation in direct descent / from the Irish emigrant John Sullivan." The second label is from the framer: "S. LOTHROP / No. 71, MARKET STREET, / MANUFACTURES / LOOKING GLASSES / Upon an extensive scale: / some of them are very large, and / ornamented in / THE NEWEST STYLE. / ALSO ELEGANT / ENGLISH MIRRORS, / AND / DRESS GLASSES / of the first quality / And a large assortment of low pr / iced GLASSES, wholesale an [sic] / retail, for the country trade, all / of which are of the best work / manship, and very low for cas[h] / [on]ly. / Old Glasses new Silvered and Fra / med, Portraits, Needle-work, Pic / tures &c.
