- Birchbark Picture. Scene From The County Fair, by Edward West Merrill (1841-1910), 1890-1900 . Scene from the play "The County Fair," first performed in Concord, NH, in 1870s or 80s. Birchbark and ink on black painted paper. Depicts woman, jockey on race horse, and timekeeper. Heads and hands lithographic prints, clothing and horse made of birchbark. Titled "SCENE FROM THE 'COUNTY FAIR' ", in white ink. Signed "DRAWN ON / BIRCHBARK / BY E.W. Merrill / Concord / N.H.", in white ink, lower right. Ornate gesso with bronze finish, no glass.
