- Description:
- Needlework Picture. Canvaswork picture of Abraham Offering Up Isaac, by Lavina Ann Haines (1819-1868). Based on an engraving that appeared in Historic Illustrations of the Bible, 1840. Original painting by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815), 1796; engraved by Henry Rolls. Worked in a needlepoint stitch [worked diagonally, rather than with the grain of the weave, as in tent stitch] with Berlin [merino] wools and silk floss. The scene depicts Isaac, with his hands tied behind his back, laid on pile of logs, with his father standing over him, holding down his head with his left hand. An angel, floating in the upper right corner, stops Isaac, and he drops the knife which he has raised over his son's body. A tree is worked on the left side, and the head of a ram appears in the lower right corner. The bearded Isaac wears dark blue Turkish trousers with a green sash fringed with cream silk tied around his waist, and a red, fur-edged robe. Isaac is draped only in a white cloth. The linen canvas is worked at eighteen stitches to the inch. It is tacked to a wooden backing board, which bears a printed label giving its provenance. Framed.
