Provenance:
Portraits of Jeremiah S. Jaques (1809-1890), Drusilla (Ladd) Jaques (1808-1866), and John Lyford Ladd (1807-1873), painted by Walter Ingalls (1805-1874), descended through John C. and Hannah (Taylor) Ladd to their daughter, Ida Nancy (Ladd) Keasor, the mother of the donor, Melba (Keasor) Hodgkins (1901-2005).

According to the donor, this portrait represents Thomas E. Ladd (1841-1905). It more likely represents the donor's great-grandfather, John Lyford Ladd (1807-1873), as claimed by one of the donor's relatives. This portrait, signed but undated, is thought to have been painted at the same time as the portraits of the sitter's sister, Drusilla Ladd Jaques (1956.168), and her husband, Jeremiah Jaques (1956.167), in 1849.
