The donor, Mary Sanborn Whitelaw, was the granddaughter of Sarah Coffin Burleigh and the great-granddaughter of Daniel Burleigh.

Sarah Coffin Burleigh (1816-1881) was the daughter of Daniel Burleigh (1777-1855), a farmer in Sanbornton, NH. The portrait is said to have been painted in 1834 when Sarah was 18. Two years later, on August 18, 1836, she married Hiram Sanborn, a farmer in Franklin Falls. It is possible that this portrait could also have been painted as a marriage portrait in 1836.
