The Maplewood was built in 1876 by Isaac S. Cruft, a Boston merchant. Starting as an 1816 farmhouse, the hotel was renovated and expanded from 1875 to 1878, increasing the hotel's capacity to 350 guests. Additional buildings were built on the grounds, including guest cottages, Maplewood Hall, and a casino. By circa 1900, the hotel capacity increased to 500 people making it one of the largest resorts in New England. From Bryant F. Tolles, "The Grand Resort Hotels of the White Mountains" (Boston: David R. Godine, 1998), 126-127.

The Maplewood featured a variety of recreational options, and became a major regional center for golf around 1900.
