Painting 1958.038 belonged to the seller's grandmother, Mary Williams Goddard (1829-1914), and was thought to have been acquired as a wedding gift when Mary Williams married Dorrance S. Goddard (1829-1910) on March 25, 1855 in Hubbardston, MA. The painting hung in their home in Worcester, MA. It passed from the grandmother to the seller's mother, Gertrude Goddard Brannon (1856-1938), and to the seller, Edna Brannon Smith (1897-1983). Edna Brannon Smith sold the painting to the NHHS in 1958 when she downsized to a smaller home.
