- Description:
- Arm Chair, Portsmouth, NH. Yoke crest rail having horizontal section at center, rectangular stiles with chamfered back corners, and vase-shaped central splat housed in horizontal rail above rush seat, rail molded at lower front edge. Narrow pine finishing strip applied with cut nails to front seat rail, which is made of ash; strip covers rush at front of rail. Back stiles and crest outlined on both inner and outer edges by a continuous bead which also extends about 3 inches below seat rails on front surfaces of back legs; the inner bead continues across central portion of crest uninterrupted by presence of splat. Relatively flat, curved arms with outward curving terminals; columnar turned arm supports are extensions of the block-and-vase turned front legs which have button feet. Square rear legs with chamfered corners except on portion of outer front corners above stretchers; front surfaces cut back at an angle below side stretchers. Four stretchers--front one with baluster turnings and central flattened ball, rear stretchers baluster turned with cone terminals and rectangular side stretchers. Painted Spanish brown. Stencilled decoration, probably added in the 19th century, on face of splat, including bird within wreath above a vase of flowers. Front and back seat rails extend through right legs, but not through left. Repaired at juncture of right arm and back stile. Terminal of left arm broken off and repaired. Two breaks in top surface of rush seat. Checks visible on all four legs.
