Object Name:
Chair
Object ID:
1995.562
Place of Origin:
New England (probably eastern New Hampshire)
Date:
1770-1780
Description:
Side Chair. Chippendale chair with yoke crest rail and a wedge shaped splat. The paint has been completely stripped (evidence of former yellow and red paint). Trapezoidal seat (20-century green and yellow fabric and cotton batting upholstery removed Oct. 17, 2005), with remnants of original dark brown leather upholstery and fabric support webbing. Rectangular stretchers, beaded on the outer edges. Square legs are also beaded. Rear legs are chamfered. Secondary wood on seat rails is rock maple, primary wood fine grain and golden, unidentified (beech, birch, or cherry?). Peg construction, with rose-head nails attaching the seat corner blocks (original) to the chair rails. That the rose head nails are visible from the exterior suggests this chair was intended for leather upholstery that covered the sides of the seat. Several "X"s marked on interior of one chair rail.
