- Description:
- Side Chair. Modified klismos form with bowed, rectangular crest rail having rounded ends and extending beyond the juncture with the stiles. There is a narrower horizontal rail framed between the stiles halfway from the seat to the crest. The face of both rails is decorated with a raised veneered panel. The S-curved stiles on the back are cut on their fronts to receive the crest rail and are rectangular in section with slightly rounded front and back surfaces. The stiles form a continuous curve with the side seat rails and saber front legs. The side rails and legs are rectangular in section with rounded tops and fronts respectively. The rear legs are square and back-curving. The slip seat with horse-cloth upholstery, rests on the front and rear seat rails to which the slip seat is attached by a hand-made and a modern screw respectively. The front and rear rails are ash veneered with mahogany. The Roman numeral "XII" is chiseled on the top of the front seat rail. There is evidence that parts of the chair were circular sawn. Frame of slip seat exposed on underside and is apparently chestnut. Corner blocks, probably added, made of mahogany, except for pine one at left corner. Chalk inscription on bottom of slip seat frame reading: "BRADLEY". Top of left front leg cracked. Left front foot damaged. Repairs made at juncture of left seat rail with stile of back. Upholstery worn at left front corner. One of a set of five.
