- Chest of Drawers, Jacobean style. Pine, oak or chestnut, and several unidentified woods, with pine secondary wood. Straight front, drawers fully decorated with wood marquetry (each drawer front is decorated with different geometric shapes). Four full-length drawers, each of different heights, not graduated (top - 4.125"; second - 8"; third - 5"; bottom - 7.25"). Top is rectangular with molding on 3 sides (same molding also on bottom of case), attached with rose-head nails. Drawers fronts are of dovetail construction; each has 2 cut and engraved brass pendant pulls, and a matching cut and engraved brass escutcheon. Top and third drawers have blind escutcheons; second and bottom drawers have locks (locks appear original, and are attached with rose-head nails). There are filled holes by each drawer pull. Sides and back are of panelled mortise and tenon construction, probably pine panels with oak or chestnut rails (back has 2 panels, sides have 1 panel each). Feet are large ball and ring turnings with pads, probably maple (may be replacements; feet on this style chest tend to either be a continuation of the styles, or squat balls); metal glides on bottom of each foot. Evidence of several layers of stripped paint, including yellow and green. No dust boards present. Bottom made up of approx. 5 planks, one of which is branded "PETT / PER[F]UME / 243 REG[E]N[T] St". Drawer bottoms each made up of 3 pieces. Entire chest of drawers very well worn, with edges softened. Presence of wrought, cut, and wire nails; evidence of re-building or extensive added supports. Chest has a "light-weight" feel. Label inside, "Ipswich Chest $1200".
