- Description:
- Wall Shelf, or Rack., with Empire-style elements. Pine wood. Three shelf unit with decorative backboard on top. Backboard has scrolled ears with circular brass medallions; center of backboard has rectangular, recessed panel with a floral-and-ray brass medallion, oriented horizontally. Side supports have serpentine profile with a scroll on top. Large floral pressed brass medallion on each scroll end. Top and bottom boards of shelf have rounded front and side edges. The upper shelf has a flat front; lower shelf has a beveled front, following the contour of the serpentine sides. Dovetail construction, with cut nails.
Underside of bottom board is unfinished and highly scratched, suggesting it originally sat on top of another piece of furniture. Changes were made later to adapt it for hanging on a wall, including the addition of 4 screw eyes attached to the side boards, as well as two drilled holes in the backboard, which has since been filled in. Pencil marks on reverse of backboard may be design doodlings. Screws added to support backboard. - Material:
