Side Chair. Carved yoke crest rail, center of which is composed of outflaring elements that appear to originate in a volute at each side of splat's top, rectangular back stiles and outer shoulders of crest outlined on both inner and outer edges by a continuous bead, which also extends below seat rail slightly on front surfaces of rear legs; narrow, vase-shaped central splat housed in horizontal rail above rush seat, front of rail being molded. Front seat rail expands into exposed blocks at ends above legs. Block-and-vase turned front legs with Spanish feet. Square back legs, front surfaces of which are cut back at an angle below side stretchers. Six turned stretchers, front one having central ball-and-ring turnings with cone terminals, two stretchers at each side being baluster turned with central ring, back stretcher plain and cylindrical. Chrome-plated steel button on bottom of each foot. Stretchers and front seat rail ash. Very little wear on front stretcher. Evidence of former green paint. One break in top surface of rush seat. No wooden pins at juncture of stiles with crest; brads instead; crest rail may be a reproduction. Part of a set of similar chairs given by donor in two different donations--1965.13 and 1966.30.
