Description:
Rocking chair, child's. Shaker manufacture, "slat-back" type, with three horizontal slats framed between turned cylindrical stiles having pointed, cone-shaped finials that broaden to flat bases above distinct necks. Slats with straight lower edges, arched upper edges, bow back slightly and are of equal height. Original tape or "worsted lace" seat in what has been called the "herringbone step" pattern, here using red and gold tape. Wide, flat arms having simply curved inner outline and elaborately shaped outer edges with baluster-turned arm supports which are continuations of the cylindrical front legs and are finished off, above juncture with arms, by "mushroom" tenon caps. Rear legs cylindrical--two on front, two at each side, one at back. Gilt transfer trademark on inside left rocker reading: "SHAKER'S / NO. 1 / TRADE MARK / MT. LEBANON, N.Y.", in upper case letters with central picture of rocking chair. Figure "1", which is model number, is also stamped on back of top slat. Back stretcher split and bound with tape. Upper surface of seat faded. Dark stain, probably the "mahogany" finish advertised by Wagan. Maple.
