Description:
Dressing Table. Painted yellow overall, with additional stenciling, free-hand painted graining, and decoration. White pine and unidentified hardwood. Step-up style, with one full-size main drawer, a step-up with two small drawers, and a backboard, all supported on slender turned legs. Backboard has a central stencilled panel with a circle of grapes and two painted leaves (stylized grape leaves?), which are surrounded by small swirls. Leaves and grapes are painted with a gold color. Backboard has rosettes (one missing) on either end. Entire backboard edged in brownish-green paint. Upper drawers are identical, have 2 gilded tin pulls each, and are decorated around each pull with red wavy lines outlined with black and brownish green striping. Between pulls is a blank oval. The left drawer has two pencil inscriptions: "D. Harris" on inside of bottom of drawer, and "Hannah Morse Croydon NH" on back of drawer. There are additional pencil marks in each drawer, as well as either "4" or "1" in the right drawer. Stencilled leaf pattern (gray and black) decorates the full edge along lower step. Horizontal red stripes painted on corner blocks. Lower drawer has two tin pulls, with painted decoration surrounding each pull as above, also leaving a blank central oval in between the pulls. Dovetail drawer construction. Legs are turned, tapering slightly toward the feet, and have three sets of ring turnings, each painted brownish-green. Feet appear to have been cut down (probably by about 1/2"). Block of wood found in right upper drawer is probably part of drawer rail.
