Description:
Arm Chair. "Sack-back" Windsor type, with continuous horizontal rail forming both arms; rail is flat, rectangular in section and elaborately shaped on outer edges at each end, these arm terminals being produced by applying separate pieces to sides of rectangular rail. The lower ends of a bent bow are tenoned through the horizontal rail from the top; eight vertical, turned and tapering spindles pass through horizontal rail and are tenoned through bow. Three turned spindles support each arm and are tenoned through it, the front spindle on each side being symmetrically turned with vase and trumpet elements, the other arm supports plain and tapering. Slightly hollowed seat, probably basswood, has modified U-shaped outline with slightly rounded front, saddle shaping and beveled edges on back and sides. Spindles tenoned into back and sides of seat following U-shaped outline. Seat extremely shallow. Four splayed legs tenoned through seat and turned with vase, reel, flattened ball, ring and cone elements. Three turned stretchers--side and medial, with vase, trumpet and barrel-shaped elements, medial stretchers repeating turnings of main arm supports. Spindles, bow, and horizontal arm rail are ash, except for two main arm supports and applied piece on right arm that are maple. Legs and stretchers maple also. Painted black. Much evidence of former green paint, and earlier gray/green paint. Two race marks still visible on bottom of seat. Maple, ash and basswood.
