- Description:
- Chest of drawers, straight front. Made by Ephraim Blanchard (1778-1841), Amherst, NH; 1820-1825. Four graduated drawers, dovetail construction, with figured mahogany veneer fronts. Two brass knobs on each drawer (replacements). Brass escutcheon on each drawer. Engaged front colonnettes are spiral turned, with ring and vase turnings above and below, ending in ball feet. Rear legs match bottoms of colonnettes. Top board of chest is rectangular with corners cut out to accommodate colonnettes; the edges of the top board are rounded. Holes on the back edge of the top board suggest there may have been a back board at one time. Mahogany veneer on pine, chestnut and white pine secondary woods. Bottom, back and drawer sides made of chestnut. Printed paper label on the interior of the top drawer reads: "ALL KINDS OF / CABINET FURNITURE, / MADE AND SOLD BY / EPHRIAM BLANCHARD, / AMHERST, N. H." The bottom drawer has a blind escutcheon. Top three drawers have locks. There are some modern screws attaching the top board and there are other signs of modern repairs. The piece appears to be refinished and there are minor cracks to the veneer. There are illegible chalk marks on the bottom. The back feet have curved brackets. There is a bottom board. No dust boards. Drawers are numbered on their backs 1-4.
