Description:
Card table. Early Empire style. Mahogany, with pine secondary wood. Approximately square tabletop (when open), with rounded corners, atop a central carved pineapple post, upon sabre legs. To open tabletop, folded top is rotated 90 degrees on a stationary pivot over a compartment, which then forms the support for the opened table. The two panels of the table top are held together with brass hinges screwed into the short ends of the tabletop edges. Double beading on outer edge of tabletop.
Compartment supporting tabletop is of dovetail construction. It is beaded on the interior, and stained red. Exterior embellishments include vertical inserts at the corners, and edging attached to the underside.
The top of the carved pineapple post is held in place with a bracket, which is mortise and tenoned to table compartment center, and also screwed at the ends. Pineapple sits atop a carved ring, from which the four sabre legs are attached. Each leg has a scroll top, and ends with a brass claw fitting, with brass caster.
Paper label under table, hand written, "No. I / N H Historical / Soc. Concord N.H.". Table has been sympathetically refinished.
